Curiosity is a quality that can and should be encouraged in all the company's employees. Why? Because it helps everyone become better at their job. So, whenever I got an opportunity to interview potential hires, I'd try my best to keep them away from the books on sales techniques and all those other hackneyed methods. After all, the real success lies in figuring out what works for you personally, as opposed to always following someone else's lead.
Human beings are curious creatures. From the moment we are born we are driven by a need to know, to discover and to understand. We ask questions, we try to solve problems and we go out of our way to learn about new things. In many ways, curiosity is the force that drives progress. While we may not always recognize it, curiosity is present in all of us, from the youngest child to the oldest adult.
How many times have you heard the question “Do you know someone who could do this?” Or “Do you have any ideas of how we could address this problem?” It happens all the time. This is not a bad thing. In fact, this is a good thing. It shows that your boss trusts you to come up with the answers. It also shows that they are aware of the fact that you are a smart person and that they are willing to listen to your ideas. The truth is, the more curious you are, the more likely you are to succeed in your career.
When you're a kid, you're curious. You look under every rock and want to know everything. But as you get older, life usually gets in the way. You realize that you can't look under every rock, and there's just so much to learn. So you create a life schedule that allows you to focus your attention on what's important.
