The First Lesson of my Life- Save first, Only Spend the Rest

The First Lesson of my Life- Save first, Only Spend the Rest

I first started to learn about the world of sales when I worked as a door-to-door salesman. Since then, I’ve learned that even the best in the industry start out just like everyone else right out of college - with nothing! But it's their drive and hard work that help them succeed by working their way up from the bottom.

During my career, I learned there were many takeaways and lessons to be learned and this website is where I’ll share my experiences and how you can apply them within your own life; whether you want to start your own business or you want some advice on how to make the most of your current job.

Since this is the beginning of something very special for me, I want to start by sharing an incident that changed my life forever. I had a picture-perfect childhood.  I remember growing up in the village, spending time playing with those around me, roaming around aimlessly and spending any money I would have on sweets and candies.

While everything was sunshine and flowers, a big jolt in my life was my father’s demise. I hadn’t had the time or the age to process the incident. I was carefree as always as my mother and maternal uncle toiled hard to get us a proper education and a better lifestyle. I only came to realize their hard work and the value of money when I went to college. I spent my first year of college with the meagre resources I had when I joined but soon came to realize that that was not enough. After I spent the summer at home, I went back to college with a determination to make money for myself. I still didn’t have the responsibility of contributing to my mother’s efforts.

I joined an enterprise that sold home needs. I was able to earn my wages quick enough that in a single day, I earned my month’s expenses! The rest of what I made was spent on either small luxuries or big splurges. My budget fluidly changed with each day. This routine carried on for some time and it kept me going as my monthly expenses were more than covered. Since I had money left over, naturally, I'd spend more and be broke more often. At the end of the month, I could barely make ends meet. But when those funds ran out… the cycle would start over again.

I got married and had my first child when I was twenty-five. That's when I really realized that you need to start saving for the future. Even then, I used to spend money on a bunch of unnecessary luxuries. If you end up spending your money on things you don't need, you'll have nothing left over to save!

I joined the insurance industry and began working for Birla Sunlife Insurance. It was only then that I learned about managing finances, and saving for the future and discovered a feeling of real financial discipline within myself for the first time. After this experience, I never looked back on my finances. Saving up became something very important to me. In fact, those savings have come in handy with everything from initial capital needed to launch our business six years ago and business-related expenditure whenever necessary!

The point of this story is that there are 3 key takeaways for all young jobseekers and aspiring entrepreneurs. One, start saving the minute you start earning. Only this way can you make your ends meet and make way for a better future. Two, never make the mistake of getting back to old habits. Unlearn them for your own good. They do nothing but ruin your life for the worst. Three, start investing small to get bigger returns in the long run. Find a mentor, all of us need one. We cannot just learn everything on our own.

I want to thank you for reading my story. This was very difficult and every word that I am writing is from the bottom of my heart - because it's what I have learned and embraced in life, and would love to share it with others in order to ensure they don't make some of the same mistakes that I made.

If my story has changed your mind in the slightest way, then I’ve achieved something that feels very close to success. I hope I will be able to inspire more such change - personally and professionally. There is an ocean of information out there but let me just add my drop to it; it may not be much, but I hope to contribute to it, nonetheless.
